Hot Plants: April

Star Magnolia

Magnolia stellata
With a spreading, somewhat oval crown, Magnolia stellata is a deciduous large shrub or small tree when mature. Very slow growing, star magnolia is usually seen in home landscapes as a medium sized shrub. Star magnolia is, however, a good deal denser and more compact. In autumn the leaves turn yellow to bronze before falling. It is striking in late winter or early spring when it appears smothered in brilliant white flowers as it blooms before the leaves appear. This magnolia puts on a show at a very early age.

Weeping Cherry

Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’
Overall, they are basically easy to grow and maintain. These Flowering Cherries grow well in full sun and require soil that is moist but not too wet. If the soil is too wet, their leaves will start to turn yellow and fall off. A yearly dose (for the first 3 or 4 years anyway) of tree fertilizer will be beneficial for the tree to grow healthy and strong for the following spring flower show.

Okame Cherry

Prunus X ‘Okame’
One of the earliest of the flowering cherries, its carmine-pink petals, with rose-red calyx and reddish flower stalks, open fully before leaf break. It has very consistent year-to-year blooming. The rosy red buds are attractive before flower break, and the calyx and reddish stamens persist for a week after flowering.

Chanticleer Flowering Pear

Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’
Popular flowering tree with dazzling display of profuse white flowers in early spring. Narrow, pyramidal tree with dark green summer foliage turning brilliant reddish purple in fall. Ideal tree for tight spaces.

Miss Kim Lilac

Syringa patula ‘Miss Kim’
Small deciduous shrub displays dark green foliage with burgundy tint in fall. The very fragrant and abundant flowers are deep purple in bud then icy blue in spring. Beautiful accent or specially trained topiary. A lilac with wonderful fragrance and good fall color needs to be planted where it can be admired three seasons of the year. The smaller-than-usual growth of this shrub makes it easy to place in the front of a border, or use as a low hedge along the drive or sidewalk.

Prairie Fire Crabapple

Malus ‘Prarie Fire’
Outstanding flowering tree; upright form becomes rounded with age. New growth is reddish maturing to dark green. Persistent, small, dark red-purple fruit. Colorful accent for smaller landscapes. Good disease resistance.
