Pansies

If you can allow your pansy plants to remain in your garden and rest during the hottest months, they will probably begin blooming again in the fall. Shearing the plants back when they start to set seed, will encourage new growth. Deadheading will encourage more blooms. As with any long blooming annual, pansies appreciate some fertilizer. However too much food will just make them leggy. They respond well to monthly foliar feeding.

Asters

Asters can be planted under full sun, which is by far the best spot. They can tolerate a little early morning shade, but too much shade will bring on the powdery mildew. Asters produce large clusters of delicate daisy-like flowers in white, purple, lavender, pink or red. They are at times mistaken for daisies, especially the white ones. They grow in abundance and love full sun.

Mums

Mums thrive in sunny areas. They should receive at least a half-day of sun. Avoid areas of standing or flowing water such as under eaves or below downspouts.Start pinching when stems are six to eight inches long and repeat when the new shoots growing from the leaf axils reach four to six inches in length. This will prevent those tall, leggy plants that break. When planting in the garden or in containers, avoid using soil from the yard(it's often too heavy and doesn't drain well). Instead, use a commercially prepared potting mix such as Gardener's Gold potting mix.

Cabbage & Kale

Ornamental cabbage and kale need full sunlight to develop their full potential of colors, so the horticulturists say always choose a well-drained location which receives at least six hours of sunlight. Fertilize twice a month for beds; every other week for planters.
